Being an engineer by training and nature, he is a problem solver and ideas person who’s thinking can challenge existing mores and procedures. He is comfortable with new technologies and proficient in many computer applications.

He has worked in his own businesses for 25 years, integrating human needs, business practices and technology in roles that enabled him to travel widely.

In his role with Primary Focus, John concentrates on rural technologies as they impact the economic development of our region.  He has developed interests in Local Economic Development, Renewable Energy Generation and in rural high speed broadband as a means to economic development in our rural areas.

John likes to put his work in to a context and the United Nations “Green Economy Initiative” is the model that integrates all the things that are important to him.  Job growth, resilient communities, intelligent cities, environmental protection and local economic development are all enabled by broadband networks.  He has a strong interest in the ‘data driven farm’ as a means to improving productivity, and in renewable energy generation, particularly small-scale wind turbines operating in distributed generation networks.

In his work, John has embraced the internet and mobile technologies, developing many websites that include blogs and social network feeds. Monitoring and contributing to Twitter, Facebook and Google+ streams are a part of his daily activities.

John is a director of his personal operating company (Allen Consulting Limited), of NZVT Films Limited and Primary Focus NZ Limited, as well as a Trustee of the Primary Focus Foundation.

On a personal front, John and Lois are breeders of Lowline Angus cattle on their small rural block near Pukekohe.  He is an active member of the Franklin Treecroppers Association, the Franklin Beekeepers Club and the BioChar Interest Group (NZ).  A keen runner (now walker) with the Auckland Joggers Club for 18 years, John has run five marathons and around 50 half-marathons.  He is also a founding member of the Auckland Curling Club, having represented New Zealand at international curling tournaments and been a past National Selector for the New Zealand Curling Association.
