Wired - Orcon

Orcon are owned by Kordia, a State Owned Enterprise (SOE), fully owned by the New Zealand government. In some areas, relevantly in Pukekohe and Waiuku, Orcon have installed their own equipment (ADSL2+) in the telephone exchanges which enables them to offer a higher speed than DSL and more cost effective serve.

At the moment (mid 2010), this is probably the best option for consumers who can get it as it offers significantly better speeds than DSL

Pros

Cons

  • Available in parts of the district
  • Probably the most cost effective option
  • can include basic telephone as part of the package
  • Requires user to be near an 'enabled' exchange
  • Not as fast as fibre but most won't notice

Consumer offer an excellent resource to help select the best broadband plan and service provider but you need to become a subscriber. The savings that could be made by selecting the best plan would easily pay for this subscription.
